COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course leads students through the ecological and historical role of fire, characteristics of smoke and the health, safety and visibility impacts of smoke. Other topics include public relations, legal requirements, meteorology, fuel consumption, smoke production dispersion modeling, and operational smoke management strategies. This course is designed to be interactive in nature. It contains a panel discussion, several exercises designed to facilitate group and class participation and case studies from a variety of fuel types and political challenges. The pre-course work assignment is designed to familiarize students with the NWCG Smoke Management Guide for Prescribed Fire, PMS 420-2, and air quality regulations that impact prescribed fire programs.
Objective
The overall objective of this course is to provide land managers with the knowledge to manage smoke and reduce its impacts on public health and welfare. Given existing and potential air quality regulations, political and social sensitivities, students will be able to:
Predict, manage, and monitor prescribed fire smoke.
Describe the legal, professional, and ethical reasons for managing smoke.
Describe the roles of federal, state, and local agencies and organizations involved with and affected by smoke from prescribed fire.
TARGET GROUP:
Prescribed Fire Burn Boss Type 1 (RXB1) and the Long Term Fire Analyst (LTAN). Other positions that would benefit from RX-410 include Fire Effects Monitor (FEMO), air regulators, fire ecologists, private landowners, other state and private agencies, prescribed fire consultants, fire planners. NOTE – that in the most resent version of the NIMS Wildland Fire Qualification System Guide (PMS 310-1), RX-410 is a required training to become a Prescribed Fire Burn Boss Type 2.
COURSE PREREQUISITES:
Completion of course pre-work prior to start of the training.
TUITION:
There is no tuition fee and lodging in military Barracks will likely be free (confirmed at time of acceptance); however, students are responsible for their own travel costs and food.
NOMINATION:
Complete the registration form at the below link (or QR code) by Friday, September 6th, 2019. Notification of acceptance will be emailed to students by Friday, September 20th, 2019. Note that space is limited, acceptance will be based on a first come first serve basis and programmatic need. Given that we expect we will not be able to accept every applicant we ask that only people who are sure they will be able to attend register.

NOTES AND SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:
Attendance in all units of instruction of the course and appropriate participation is required to receive a certificate of completion.
For SECURITY REASONS, provide on your registration form your full legal name, date of birth, and driver’s license number (include state of issue). Incorrectly or incomplete registration forms will result in the applicant not being considered. Access is dependent upon results of a background check and may be denied. Criteria may be sent upon request. All students will be expected to have a current and valid government issued picture identification card when entering the base. Access to the base will be through the Bourne gate (Main Gate off Rte. 28). Directions will be provided upon request.
All individuals enrolling in the training must be a minimum of 18 years of age and be affiliated with an organization and attending as part of that organization, whether that is as a volunteer or employee.
This course will be classroom based.
Students are required to bring writing utensils and note pad. It is highly recommended but not required that students bring a computer with GIS installed or at a minimum a computer or tablet.
Free lodging in military Barracks will likely be available upon advanced request (to be confirmed at time of acceptance). Please state that housing is needed when your nomination form is sent, additional information will then be sent to you. If staying in base housing you will need to bring your own bedding and a towel. A list of local accommodations will also be available upon request.
